The Belarusian renewable energy market is underdeveloped, but is gradually becoming increasingly important. An EU-funded project helps strengthen this market by introducing renewable energy initiatives in Navahrudak, before its implementation throughout the country. The ultimate goal of the project is to set the stage for a stronger economy and greener environment.
Belarus lacks the necessary amount of mineral and fuel resources, such as natural gas, oil and coal. At the same time, the country has an energy-intensive economy. The development of renewable energy sources will improve energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The project is developing a Strategy for renewable energy sources and a roadmap until 2020 for the city of Novogrudok, the Grodno region of Belarus. Various feasibility studies for a number of renewable projects, such as a wind farm and a biogas plant, are also under development. Meanwhile, a solar water heater, a heat pump and a photovoltaic panel are being installed at a local hospital.

In addition, the training and advisory center will provide advice and advice on renewable energy. Among those who will be trained are the public, local authorities, teachers and students, as well as employees of the financial sector. Students will also benefit, as a new course in environmental protection and the rational use of natural resources is conducted at the local agricultural college. The development of various websites, events and information materials is also provided.

The above initiatives should lead to increased investment in renewable energy in the region through public-private partnerships (PPPs). This, in turn, will create jobs, reduce emissions and improve the quality of life of local residents.

A roadmap and strategy will be essential to assist local authorities in implementing future renewable projects. Finally, the six feasibility studies carried out should help attract significant foreign investment in the region.
