Minister of Energy, Thailand boasts community power plant policy would bolster the country's renewable energy through the Global Ministerial Conference on System Integration of Renewables in Germany on October 1, 2019, and states that Thailand has the highest renewable energy use in Southeast Asia (SEA) is stepping into the country with the largest installed capacity of solar, wind and biomass energy in the region.
Sonthi Ratthi Sonthi Chirawong, Minister of Energy said after participating in the vision and exchange with the leading countries at the policy level in the Global Ministerial Conference on System Integration of Renewables in Germany on 1 October 2019 that has been through this platform that it is important because it is a policy exchange with many leading countries concerning direction of renewable energy development or alternative energy which is becoming the mainstream instead of energy from traditional fossil fuels. While the goal of all leading energy countries is to increase the proportion of alternative energy, Thailand has a goal in accordance with the Alternative Energy Development and Alternative Energy Plan by 2037, the proportion of electricity produced from renewable energy fuels will be at the level of 20% or more than the current level which complies with the Energy for all Energy Policy, energy for everyone The emergence of community power plants that use fuel from renewable energy occurs in different regions around the country, considered a transition of alternative energy in Thailand.
"For Thailand Alternative energy not just a direction but we have done more than that, by establishing policies for Community Power Plant which would depend on the strengths of agricultural materials of each community that can be used as fuel to produce electricity to the community and can sell the excess into the system as well. In the future, it is expected that Thailand will be able to use the establishment model community power plant across all regions"said Sonthirat.
In exchange of Thai policy vision The Minister of Energy, Thailand discussed the success story of alternative energy that Thailand is recognized as a regional leader in energy excellence. The International Energy Agency (IEA) states that Thailand has the highest renewable energy use in Southeast Asia (SEA), excluding large hydro power plants. Thailand is stepping into the country with the largest solar, wind and biomass production capacity in the region. Thailand is one of the first countries that established specialized funds for investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency by government and private sectors. Thai commercial banks have experience in financing funds for renewable energy projects. Various energy projects Thailand is being developed seriously in all regions.
In the implementation of policies and projects, Thailand has a variety of policies to stimulate innovation and change to sources. Renewable energy and diverse new energy (Diversified) are promoted in systems spread to many areas; decentralized and cost-effective, which will bring economic benefits to the local community under the concept for Energy for All, current policy in development of renewable energy systems. There is a combination of many renewable energy sources. It can also be combined to the energy storage system also known as a Renewable Energy Hybrid System. For example, installing and combining floating solar cells with water energy. (Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid) in the amount of 2,725 megawatts operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in the area above the reservoir that produces electricity from hydro
Thailand has the potential in renewable energy including solar energy, biomass energy that has strong strength in agricultural materials is a good fuel including corncobs, rice straw, rice husk, napier, and wind energy, which originally had a weak point in Thailand. For wind power but nowadays technology has changed and is able to use the wind that exists in Thailand to be able to produce higher energy efficiency.
"Thailand is committed to developing renewable energy to increase the country's energy confidence. We are ready to support renewable energy that is diverse by developing electrical systems through a combination of management of renewable energy and I believe that this conference will be a starting point for us to share ideas about how to manage important opportunities and challenges to handle the transition to integration of renewable energy system to be reliable to continue supporting the low-carbon economy" said the Energy Minister.
