TEEMA's Current Partnership with Japan

TEEMA has 9 partner associations in Japan: Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), Communication and Information Network Association of Japan (CIAJ), Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEMA), Japan Management Association (JMA), Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufacturers' Association (JEMIMA), Japan Analytical Instruments Manufacturers' Association (JAIMA), Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan (SMRJ), and Electronics Industry Association of Akita (EIAA).
TEEMA collaborates regularly with partner associations to organize exhibitions, seminars, conferences and other activities to help member companies seize business opportunities in the Japanese market. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, TEEMA has been actively utilizing online video conferences along with physical displays, including a series of exchanges such as the Taiwan-Japan Electronic Industry Online B2B Matching Event coorganized with the Japan Management Association (JMA), to help TEEMA members to expand their sales to Japan during the pandemic, turning the crisis into a business opportunity.
TEEMA has a long history of organizing delegations to participate in exhibitions in Japan. Since the delegation exhibited at the "Japan Electronics Show" organized by Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) in 1989, TEEMA now organizes up to 12 delegations to participate in exhibitions in Japan every year, helping Taiwanese electrical and electronic manufacturers to leverage professional exhibition platforms to enter the Japanese market.
Since 1993, the Japan Liaison Office has been established in Tokyo, and since 1998, the Japan Office of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has been entrusted to jointly conduct business. The main task of ITRI is to introduce Japanese technologies and promote technical exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, and TEEMA's main task is to help promote business opportunities between members and the Japanese industry. The cooperation between the two parties not only strengthens the complementary advantages, but also combines resources and network, and through various channels and opportunities, promotes the strategic alliance and partnerships between Taiwan and Japan enterprises.
In recent years, with the needs of member manufacturers in the elec t r ical and elec t ronic manufacturing industry diversify and the Taiwanese government listing "Taiwan-Japan Business Collaboration to Enter Third Marketplace" as a key policy goal, the Japan Liaison Office, an oversea extension of TEEMA, not only serves as a local contact point and introduces the latest business opportunities in Japan to TEEMA members, but also provides coordination functions during exhibitions and delegation visits, including seeking local Japanese buyers and hosting business matching events, to help members to achieve maximum results when they visit Japan.

Mr. Richard Lee, Chairman of TEEMA, visited Mr. Hiroyasu Izumi, Chief Representative of Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office

In order to consolidate the cooperation and friendship between TEEMA and Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (hereinafter referred to as "JTEA"), Mr. Richard Lee, Chairman of TEEMA, along with TEEMA Advisors Mr. Ching Chang Wen, Mr. William Chang, TEEMA President Mr. Joseph Lin and TEEMA Vice President Mr. Roger Liao, paid a visit to Mr. Hiroyasu Izumi, Chief Representative of JTEA Taipei Office, on February 18, 2021, during which they discussed the development of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, the development of innovation and technology in southern Taiwan, and the direction of future cooperation between the two organizations.
TEEMA suggested that Japanese companies which produce materials and equipment for semiconductor could continue to invest in Taiwan and Taiwan and Japan's electrical and electronic manufacturers should join forces to enter New Southbound countries such as Vietnam, India, etc.; Mr. Izumi thinks that Taiwan's success in pandemic control has improved Taiwan's global status significantly, but Taiwan' s roadmap for its technology industry needs to be clearly determined. In contrast to the Indian and Vietnamese markets, Mr. Izumi suggested that Taiwanese and Japanese manufacturers can join hands to enter Bangladesh, because the Bangladesh government system is faster and more efficient than India' s, and its geographical location is close to India, Myanmar, and Bhutan, forming a Greater Bengal region. The area is not attracting much attention presently, and it remains a blue ocean market.
Representat i ve I zumi pointed out that the investment projects of Japanese enterprises in the Greater Bengal area are mostly in the basic and consumer industries. The electrical and electronic manufacturing industry has yet to be developed there.
A Japanese professional industrial zone developer, Sojitz, was mentioned in the meeting as it has set up an office in Dhaka of Bangladesh to assist Japanese businesses that are interested in entering Bangladesh. Therefore, Taiwan and Japan can also cooperate in developing in the Greater Bengal area, making it a breaking point for Taiwanese businesses' new southbound development.
In addition, Mr. Hiroyasu Izumi said that Taiwan's development in "hydrogen energy" is not as advanced as other new energy sources. He believes that the hydrogen energy technologies developed by Japanese manufacturers could definitely be of tremendous help to Taiwan and looks forward to continuous exchanges to strengthen cooperation between Taiwan and Japan's industries.

Reinforce Advocacy on Important Issues such as Taiwan's ICT Industry and Cooperation Opportunities for Taiwan-Japan Electrical and Electronic Industries to Japan

On November 9, 2020, JTEA invited Mr. Richard Lee, Chairman of TEEMA, to write an article on important issues such as the current situation of Taiwan's ICT industry and opportunities for cooperation between Taiwan and Japan's electrical and electronic industries, which is published in the February 2021 issue of JTEA's magazine, KORYU. In the past, only Japanese companies were asked to write articles for KORYU, and the content was mostly to promote Japanese culture and Taiwan-Japan cultural and historical exchanges, and was edited by the Japanese headquarter. Starting from the fourth quarter of 2020, KORYU has changed its editorial direction. In addition to increasing reports on the economy, it also asks for contributions from key industrial leaders in Taiwan.
Chairman Lee took the opportunity to promote Taiwan's ICT industry to the broad audience of industry, government, academic and research members of JTEA.
The focus of the piece is on the effects of US-China trade war on Taiwan's ICT industry supply chain, Taiwan's ICT industry production and sales in 2020, Taiwanese businesses' global supply chain development and future business opportunities, the close trade partnership between Taiwan and Japan, and the exploration of further cooperation opportunities in the electrical and electronic industries of Taiwan and Japan. The summary of the article is as follows.
